Zimmer places at York New Standard Corp. Invitational

Results

YORK, Pa.Zeke Zimmer carried the torch for Elizabethtown wrestling Saturday at the York New Standard Corporation Invitational, placing fourth in the 174-pound bracket.

Zimmer went 6-2 in the tournament. He collected his second career pin –and first since his freshman season– at 4:24 of his first round match against Ferrum's MaNako Peay.

A 7-6 loss in the second round to Ithaca's Jaison White put the senior into the wrestle back bracket, where he mowed throw Jagger Rebozo (SUNY Cortland) and teammate Quinn Ruble with 13-0 and 11-2 major decisions.

Zimmer kept pushing through the bracket with a 6-2 decision over Dan Fiorvanti (Coast Guard) and an 8-1 victory against Johnson & Wales' Ken Dougherty. White could not take the mat for a rematch with Zimmer in the consolation semifinals, putting E-town's active career wins leader (67) up against Delaware Valley's Ben Schweiger for third.

Schweiger would scratch out a 7-6 victory, leaving Zimmer fourth, but the Bala Cynwyd native became the Blue Jays first place winner in three tournaments this season.

Freshman Chris Kummerer (141) and Chad Lammer (149) both reached the 10-win mark before the new year.

The duo were Elizabethtown's deepest advancing wrestlers in winner's brackets Saturday. Kummerer, the Hamburg product, pinned Johns Hopkins' Sam Sands in 91 seconds in the second round and shutout Merchant Marine's Trent Dloby 12-0 in the third round before falling in the quarterfinals. Kummerer then went on a point-scoring spree to down Joshua Di Santo (Delaware Valley) 17-10 in the fifth round of wrestle backs.

SUNY Cortland's Adrian Berry would end Kummerer's day with a fall at 1:36 of their consolation quarterfinal match, but Kummerer finished the tournament with a 3-2 record and is now 10-8 on the season, tied with Chad Lammer for second on the team in wins behind Zimmer (16).

Lammer scored an 11-1 major decision over Ed Bliemeister (SUNY Cortland) in the first round and doubled up Matt Vieira (Coast Guard), 8-4, in the second. An injury would shorten Lammer's day, forcing him out of his quarterfinal match and the tournament.

At 125, John Archangelo notched his first major decision of the year, 9-1, against Austin Maltez (TCNJ) in the first round. He would fall to All-American and seventh-place finisher at the 2014 NCAA DIII Championships, Paul Bewak (Johns Hopkins), in the second round, but answer back with a pin of York's Evan Shirakawa (1:07) in a wrestle back.

Philip Torresani went 2-2 with wrestle back wins over Alex Hin (York), 3-2, and Archangelo, 6-5.

Junior Bryan Pflanz also won his opening match, 12-5, over Austin Jenkins (Ferrum), but like Archangelo, Pflanz faced a returning All-American in Coast Guard's Nate Giorgio in the second round. Giorgio, a two-time All-American, scored a fall at :48 second en route to winning the 133-pound weight class and being named most outstanding wrestler of the tournament.

Rafi Sayada pinned Landon Leithauser (Apprentice School) in 6:26 of a first round match at 165, while Ruble registered a 2:52 fall of Steven Loevsky (York) in a wrestle back at 174.

Luke Fernandez (184) had a pin of Nick Burch (Merchant Marine) at 1:02 of a first round wrestle back. The sophomore advanced all the way to the consolation quarterfinals before falling to Connor Gabriel (Delaware Valley) for the second time, 9-7. Gabriel beat Fernandez by an almost identical 9-8 score in the first round.

197-pound entry Jared Weaver earned a wrestle back pin over Ferrum's Nick Rodriguez (1:26) and heavyweight Steven Paul moved into the second round with a 3-2 decision over Kyle Levy (Coast Guard). DelVal sophomore Zach Roseberry, ranked No. 2 in the country by the NWCA and D3wrestle.com, stopped Paul's run in the second round. Roseberry was an All-American (fourth) in the weight class at last year's national championships.

The Blue Jays will now take a month off for finals and winter break before returning with a dual at Scranton on Wednesday, Jan. 7, at 7 p.m.
