Smith achieves All-American status at Div. III Championships

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Junior Ganon Smith won three matches on Friday at the NCAA Div. III Wrestling Championships to go into Saturday as the 23rd All-American in Elizabethtown College wrestling program history while senior Will Davis saw his season come to an end in consolation round four.

Both Smith and Davis started off Friday in pigtail matches. Smith, a three-time qualifier at NCAAs, started off with a 4-1 decision over Roanoke's Vincenzo Corvetto. The junior pinned Adrian's Blake Williams, the nationally-ranked eighth seed at 184, at 5:52 to advance to the evening's quarterfinal matchup with top-seeded Jack Ryan of SUNY Oneonta.

Smith used two early takedowns to get out in front and worked out of some difficult positions to keep Ryan from scoring and secure his All-America status with a 7-2 decision and a spot in the semifinals Saturday morning. Smith went 2-1 against ranked opponents on day one.

Davis began with a commanding 15-2 major decision over Ohio Northern's Gavin Layman. Davis led 7-0 after the first period, 11-1 after two and wrapped it up at 15-2. The senior went up against the top-seed at 197, Massoma Endene of Wartburg. A loss put Davis into wrestlebacks Friday evening, where he stayed alive with an 11-6 decision over Carson Licastri in consolation round three.

Davis would see his season come to a close Friday night in round four as Ben Kawczynski got the pin to knock Davis out of the NCAA Championships.

Smith will take on Marcus Orlandoni, the fifth seed, in the semifinals tomorrow morning. Saturday's competition begins at 10 a.m.
