Smith places fourth at NCAA Div. III Championships

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Junior Ganon Smith finished fourth at 184 pounds for the Elizabethtown College wrestling team at the 2025 NCAA Div. III Wrestling Championships at Amica Mutual Pavilion.

Smith's day began with a close 3-2 loss via decision in the 184-pound semifinals, knocking him down into wrestlebacks. To earn a spot in the third-place match, Smith would have to beat the second-seed Kasey Ross of Wartburg.

Smith beat Ross via decision 9-6 to advance to the afternoon's third-place match, where he would take on a familiar foe in top-seeded Jack Ryan of SUNY Oneonta.

There was no score between the two through the first period. Ryan started down in the second and got the escape point and led 1-0 after two periods. Smith did the same in the third, getting out of the clutches of Ryan to tie the match at 1-1.

Ryan scored what seemed to be a late takedown in the third, but Elizabethtown's successful challenge nullified the three points and overtime was needed, still tied at 1-1.

This time, Ryan earned the takedown, and even another a second Etown challenge, the decision was upheld, giving Ryan third and Smith fourth.

Smith ends his season at 36-5, tied for the fifth-most wins in a single-season in program history. It is the most wins for a Blue Jays' wrestler since Bob Onorato recorded 36 in 1997-98.

Smith's fourth place positioning as an All-American is also the best since Joe Ghione's fourth-place finish in 2018. Smith is the first All-American at 184 since Julian Meaney in 2013.
