Field hockey picks up big win at Juniata

HUNTINGDON, Pa. — The Elizabethtown College field hockey team went into Saturday's contest at Juniata needing a big road win to pull even with the Eagles in the Landmark Conference Standings. The Blue Jays did just that, getting a goal from Taylor Alwine and holding on to blank the Eagles 1-0.

Elizabethtown (8-5, 3-1 Landmark) came into Saturday's conference game with Juniata (10-3, 3-1 Landmark) on a three-game winning streak and winners of eight of its past ten.

The Jays controlled much of the half, registering the first four shots of the game in the opening ten minutes before the Eagles had one of their own. E-town did break through on one of those first four shots, as Alwine laced a shot that found the cage. The assist came from Emily Mason off a Blue Jays' penalty corner at the 9:35 mark of the first half.

Kortney Showers tried to bring things level a minute later, but Selene Jones stoned her scoring chance to keep the Eagles scoreless. Jones was counted upon again two minutes later to save a shot off the stick of Sarah Bilheimer.

Following Bilheimer's attempt at 12:24, neither team could generate a shooting opportunity until late in the half when Jones saved another shot by Bilheimer.

The Blue Jays maintained the 1-0 advantage throughout the second half en route to the third shutout of the season for Jones. E-town and Juniata are now tied for second in the conference standings behind Catholic (5-0).

E-town's next game is Tuesday, October 21 at Wolf Field versus Ferrum. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
