ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Plenty of treats on Halloween for the Elizabethtown College field hockey team barraged Drew to the tune of an 8-0 win on Wolf Field Saturday afternoon in the Landmark Conference First Round.
Carly Schumacher had a hat trick plus an assist while
Hannah Long added a pair of goals for the Blue Jays.
It did not take long for Long to put her team ahead in the early going. She scored just 3:26 into the game to make it 1-0 right away for Elizabethtown and put the pressure on the Rangers.
Long's goal was the only one of the first quarter and the Jays maintained their 1-0 lead without too much resistance as Etown's defense was able to hold the Drew offense at bay. Schumacher would register her first of the game a few minutes before halftime as EC led by two at the break, 2-0.
The barrage really began in the third quarter thanks to Schumacher, who would go on to score three consecutive goals for the Blue Jays. The first-year forward was able to squeeze the ball past the Rangers' goalie at the near post to make it 3-0. Less than two minutes later, she was at it again, this time taking a ball that
Calleigh Hoy would slip to her right in front of goal to make it 4-0. Three and a half minutes later,
Ava Wolfe got on the scoresheet thanks to a feed from Schumacher, who squared a ball across the middle. Wolfe possessed and spun on her backhand, made the adjustment with her stick to keep the defender from checking it away and scored to make it 5-0 by the end of the third.
Elizabethtown wasn't done yet as they would put up another three goals in the fourth. Nearly six minutes gone into the fourth, Long assisted on
Hailey Meyer's goal before the senior collected her second of the afternoon with less than five to play.
Kaylie Noel got in on goal and with a number of bodies trying to scrape the ball away or push it toward goal, it was Noel's stick that was able to touch the ball in.
Etown outshot Drew 31-2 by game's end as the Jays were relentless on the offensive end.
The win was the 13th of the season for the program, the most since reaching 13 in the 2018 season. It is also the second straight semifinal appearance for head coach
Grace Hardy and her crew.
The Blue Jays will look to take that momentum up to face top-seeded Scranton on Tuesday, November 3, at 7 p.m.
