Women's tennis drops Spring Break matches against BSC, Mobile

ORLANDO -- The defending Landmark Conference champion Elizabethtown College women's tennis team embarked on one its tougher Spring Break schedules on Saturday and Sunday. The Blue Jays fell by similar 9-0 scores to Birmingham-Southern and the nation's 20th-ranked NAIA team, University of Mobile.

Birmingham-Southern came out with all three doubles points and never looked back in Saturday night's win over the Jays (2-1) at the USTA National Campus.

Elizabethtown's second doubles team of Amber Burd and Laura Gribble provided the stiffest test for the Panthers (5-2), before dropping an 8-4 decision to Virginia Hammond and Isabella Wisener.

Junior Meghan Chemidlin pushed Wisener at second singles, nearly stealing the first set. Wisener held on for a 7-6 (7) tiebreaker victory and went on to take the second, 6-3.

The Panthers won the five remaining singles matches in straight sets. Burd captured three games in a loss at No. 3, with Kaitlyn O'Connor doing the same at No. 6.

Sunday, March 4 (Lake Cane Tennis Center)

The University of Mobile got off to an equally fast start Sunday night and really showed its strength in singles by winning all but one set 6-0 or 6-1.

E-town won three games at third doubles, where Sarah Donner and Kaitlyn O'Connor were bested by the Rams' (5-3) Marina Capitani and Claire Travis. The Blue Jays' top pair of Lenea Riehl and Meghan Chemidlin took two games in their match.

O'Connor grabbed two games off Travis in the first set of their match at sixth singles, but the Rams never allowed Elizabethtown back into the match.

The Jays will be back in action at the USTA National Campus against Rhodes at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday to close out their Spring Break trip.
