Women's tennis doubles up Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. -- Fall dual matches have been somewhat of a rarity for the Elizabethtown women's tennis team over the last seven seasons, but the Blue Jays passed their first test of 2017-18 with a 6-3 victory over NCAA Division II Millersville Sunday afternoon.

E-town jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles and quickly won the three necessary matches in singles to ensure the win.

Junior Amber Burd and senior Sam Procak were winners in both doubles and singles for the Blue and Gray.

Procak and  Kaitlyn O'Connor improved to 3-0 on the season with an 8-2 win at third doubles against Millersville's Kelley Hershey and Victoria Hanus, giving Elizabethtown the early edge.

The Marauders (0-1) tied the match with a hard-fought 8-5 win at first doubles by Katina Jones and Corinne Grohoski, but it was the Division III Blue Jays gaining the upper hand going to singles. Burd and Laura Gribble held off Megan Rovenolt and Haley Nauman, 8-6, for the decisive third point at second doubles.

Though Millersville would even the score at two following Jones' 6-0, 6-0 win over Lenea Riehl to start singles, Elizabethtown answered back by taking the next four matches.

Procak took third singles 6-4, 6-1 over Rovenolt and Burd got past Nauman 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 to bring E-town (1-0) within a point of winning the match.

Meghan Chemidlin took care of those honors by outlasting Grohoski 6-0, 6-7 (4), 10-6 in a super tiebreaker at No. 2. The win moved Chemidlin, a Stewartsville, New Jersey, native, to 39-5 in her singles career.

Sarah Donner also won for the Blue Jays, besting Hershey 6-1, 6-2 at fifth singles. MU's Lauren Weaver topped Gribble at sixth singles in another super tiebreaker.

Elizabethtown won its second straight match over the Marauders. The local rivalry was rekindled last season during former Blue Jay head coach Matt Helsel's first year with MU. Prior to last season the two women's programs hadn't met since 1997.

The Blue Jays will finish their fall season with a match at Penn State Harrisburg next Sunday, Oct. 1, at 1 p.m.
