Women's tennis wins six flight titles at King's Invitational

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. -- Meghan Chemidlin, Kaitlyn O'Connor and Sam Procak won singles and doubles flights at this weekend's King's College Women's Tennis Invitational and the Blue Jays accounted for six flight titles overall.

Four of Elizabethtown's titles came in singles, where No. 2 Chemidlin, No. 3 Procak, No. 4 Amber Burd and No. 7 O'Connor were victorious in their respective brackets.

Chemidlin, who received a first round bye, won 6-3, 6-0 over Julia Keppel of King's in the semifinals and showed even better in capturing the final over Misericordia's Carly Young 6-0, 6-1.

Procak had no issues on her way to a pair of wins at flight three. The Delawarean cruised past Emily Kabalka (King's) 6-2, 6-0 to reach the final against Misericordia's Linsey Parks and dropped just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 straight set victory.

Following the same path as Chemidlin and Procak, Burd claimed straight set wins in the semis and finals at flight four. Burd took care of Misericordia's Amberlynn Habich 6-3, 6-2 in the semis and defeated King's sophomore Martina Gale 6-2, 6-0 in the finals.

The only Blue Jay having to advance out of a first round match was O'Connor at seventh singles. The junior from Warminster navigated her bracket with relative ease, starting with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Olivia Watson of Marywood. O'Connor followed her initial victory up with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph against Misericordia's Taylor Daton in the semis and a 6-4, 6-3 win over Susquehanna's Hannah Maykut in the championship match.

Elizabethtown's top flight entrant, sophomore Lenea Riehl, won a pair of matches on her way to a spot in the final, while No. 5 Sarah Donner also advanced to her respective final.

Riehl wouldn't leave empty-handed, however, as she teamed up with Chemidlin to win the top doubles flight over Emily Fernandez and Keppel of host King's 8-5. E-town picked up the title at third doubles, too, with Procak and O'Connor shutting out the Misericordia duo of Alexandra Kester and Erika Slowicki, 8-0.

At No. 2 doubles, Burd and Laura Gribble won twice before dropping their title match to Misericordia's Samantha Kropa and Daton, 8-5.

This weekend's tournament was currently the only date on Elizabethtown's fall schedule. The Blue Jays will resume play in March as they try to defend their Landmark championship for a fourth straight season.
