Blue Jays take on Skidmore in NCAA tournament

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Elizabethtown women's tennis will make its ninth NCAA Championship appearance, Friday, when it faces 20th-ranked Skidmore in a First Round match at Middlebury College.

The Blue Jays are headed back to Middlebury's campus in western Vermont for the second year in a row after winning their third consecutive Landmark Conference championship, 5-0, over Scranton last Saturday. It was Elizabethtown's eighth straight conference title dating back to its days as members of the MAC Commonwealth Conference and 2017 marks the program's eighth consecutive trip to the national tournament. Friday's matchup will be the first between Elizabethtown and Skidmore, and is set to get underway at 1:30 p.m.

Elizabethtown (13-4) defeated Penn State Behrend, 5-1, in its NCAA First Round match last year and is 3-8 all-time in the national tournament. The Blue and Gray also advanced out of the First Round in 2011-12, defeating Endicott, and 2012-13, when it beat Hunter.

Skidmore, ranked 20th in the latest Oracle/ITA NCAA Division III Poll, won its seventh straight Liberty League championship, 5-0, over Vassar last Saturday to earn one of 38 spots guaranteed to conference champions in the 49-team field. The Thoroughbreds (12-7) are in the national tournament for the 21st time and 11th year in a row.

Friday's Elizabethtown/Skidmore winner will face Amherst (6-9) in a Second Round match on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. The regional final is set for Sunday at noon. Also competing in the Blue Jays' regional pod are SUNY Geneseo (12-8), Farmingdale State (14-4) and host Middlebury (14-4).

The first, second, and third rounds of the NCAA Division III Championship tournament will be played at regional sites Friday-Sunday, May 12-14, or Thursday-Saturday, May 11-13. University of the South and the Chattanooga Sports Commission will host the team championships finals, May 22-27 at The Champions Tennis Club in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
