Women's tennis overwhelms Goucher

HERSHEY, Pa. -- Taylor Helsel won her 40th career singles match and moved within nine victories of 100 combined for her career as Elizabethtown won its seventh consecutive match, 9-0, over Goucher Saturday afternoon.

Rain soaked the Alumni Courts during the morning hours, Saturday, and continued to plague Elizabethtown and surrounding areas throughout the afternoon, forcing the Blue Jays to move their match with the Gophers indoors to the nearby Hershey Racquet Club.

The move was certainly well-received by the two-time defending Landmark Conference champion Blue Jays, who shut out an opponent for the first time this season.

Helsel and senior teammate Madison McCall rolled to an 8-1 win over Alice Goldstein-Plesser and Leigh Oehrig at first doubles paving the way for Elizabethtown's (9-4, 5-1 Landmark) dominant afternoon.

The Jays made it 2-0 with Meghan Chemidlin and Lenea Riehl winning their fourth in a row together, 8-3, against Ali Gorson-Morrow and Mackenzie Donohue at second doubles.

Elizabethtown's third tandem of Amber Burd and Kaitlyn O'Connor completed the doubles sweep, holding off Goucher's (4-10, 1-4) Ali Tomasevich and Amber Penaloza in a tiebreaker 9-8 (5). For O'Connor, it was her first doubles match of the season and first career doubles win.

Singles brought more of the same for the Blue and Gray, who cruised to straight set wins in all six flights.

Helsel reached the 40-win mark for her career 6-0, 6-1 against Goldstein-Plesser. Riehl also took a clean set in topping Donohue 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4.

Madison McCall moved into sole possession of seventh on the program's all-time singles wins list with her 54th and also moved up to seventh in career combined victories with 109. The Bath, Pennsylvania, native registered a 7-5, 6-0 triumph over Oehrig at second singles, Saturday.

Chemidlin, playing a third singles, beat Gorson-Morrow 6-2, 6-3 for her team-leading 15th win in 17 matches.

Senior Brooke Hillriegel slid into the No. 6 spot in the lineup and defeated Katie Marzerka 6-4, 6-1 for her first singles win of the season, while Burd finished off the 9-0 sweep with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Tomasevich at No. 5.

Elizabethtown puts a bow on its Landmark regular season schedule tomorrow when it hosts Catholic on Senior Day at 1 p.m. The Blue Jays need a win and a pair of Drew losses to Juniata and Susquehanna to claim the top seed in the upcoming Landmark Conference Championship tournament.

A win Sunday will ensure the Jays of a home semifinal match on Wednesday, May 3.

Also, Saturday, head coach Eric Fritzges announced that Elizabethtown will make up its postponed home match with Messiah this coming Wednesday, April 26, at 4 p.m.
