Wilkes pushes past Blue Jays

Results

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -- Wilkes jumped on Elizabethtown early in singles play Thursday morning, winning five of six flights to hand the Blue Jays a 6-3 loss at the Hilton Head Island Beach & Tennis Resort.

With both the Wilkes men's --against St. John Fisher-- and women's teams playing concurrently, the women started with their six singles matches. The Lady Colonels (10-0) ranked 19th in the ITA Atlantic South Region, took advantage.

Wilkes won five of the six matches, all in straight sets, to decide the match's outcome before doubles got underway.

Meghan Chemidlin defeated Dana Saliyev at fourth singles for to get the Blue Jays (1-3) a point. E-town's sophomore led 6-3, 5-2, before Saliyev retired.

Chemidlin and Madison McCall controlled their second doubles match against Wilkes' Laura Zielinski and Erin Volutza, picking up an 8-1 victory. The Jays' third doubles pair of Amber Burd and Laura Gribble led Nicole Gaetani and Brittany Stanon most of the way before prevailing 9-8 (3) in a tiebreaker.

The Blue Jays close their Spring Break trip to HHI Friday against Gordon College at 3:30 p.m.
