Roanoke comes back to defeat women's tennis

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -- Elizabethtown got off to a fast start against Roanoke Sunday afternoon, but the Maroons pulled it together late and dealt the Blue Jays a 5-4 loss at the Van Der Meer Tennis Center.

Senior Madison McCall and sophomore Meghan Chemidlin were victorious in singles and doubles action for the Jays, with McCall now just seven wins away from 100 combined in her career.

McCall and Chemidlin picked up E-town's (1-1) first of two doubles wins, 8-3, over Lydia Dey and Emma Barker at No. 2. The Blue and Gray went into singles ahead 2-1 following an 8-5 victory for Amber Burd and Laura Gribble at No. 3.

Elizabethtown drew within a point of securing the match as No. 2 McCall and No. 4 Chemidlin were first to finish in singles. McCall had no issues with Colette Wibaut in a 6-2, 6-2 victory, while Chemidlin, too, dropped just four games in a 6-3, 6-1 win against Barker.

The early success had the Blue Jays up 4-1 in the match, but Roanoke was threatening in the remaining four singles matches. The Maroons knotted the match with wins by No. 5 Madeline Herring, No. 1 Emily Henderson and No. 6 Dey.

Blue Jay freshman Lenea Riehl and Roanoke's Catherine Lee found themselves in the deciding match and it was an instant classic.

Lee held off Riehl in a first set tiebreaker 7-6 (3), before Riehl turned around for a 7-6 (9) tiebreaker win in the second. Fittingly, the two played deep into a 10-point super tiebreaker to decide the match. Riehl had all the momentum, leading 9-7 with two match points to close it out, but Lee won the next four points to claim the deciding tiebreaker, 11-9.

Elizabethtown will look to regroup before Wednesday's match against NAIA member Milligan (Tenn.) at 11:30 a.m.
