Brown homers again, softball splits first day of spring break trip

LEESBURG, Fla. -- The weather in Florida may not even be as hot as Kelsey Brown's bat to start her senior season. Brown belted her third home run of the season in four games Sunday as the Elizabethtown College softball team opened the spring break trip with a split against Saint Vincent and Haverford. The Blue Jays fell to SVC, 8-4, before hammering Haverford, 12-0, in five innings.

The Bearcats scored three runs in the top of the second inning to jump ahead of Elizabethtown (2-2) 3-0. E-town got a run back in the bottom of the fourth when Brown singled home Emma Varrato to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Saint Vincent (1-0) tacked on five runs in the fifth to take an 8-1 lead. Alyssa Wilkinson plated Varrato with an RBI hit in the bottom of the sixth to get a run back, but it's all the Bearcats would allow the Jays in the inning.

E-town would score twice in the seventh, but only twice, and SVC would hold on for an 8-4 win.

The offense came on strong in the second game Sunday morning. Brown bashed her third HR of the year, a three-run shot, to center field, bringing home Varrato and Mara Rhodes. Elizabethtown led 3-0 after the first.

In the second, Varrato drove in two with a single to center as Rhodes and Brittany Ritter crossed home safely. Dark reached on an error that allowed Jess Kutteroff to score and the Jays doubled the lead to 6-0. Brown tacked on an RBI sac fly, her fourth run driven in in two at-bats.

Rhodes and Kutteroff had RBIs in the third inning and Varrato knocked in another pair of runs and the Blue Jays were in total control at 11-0. Ritter's RBI bunt in the fourth made it 12-0.

Sara McKee limited Haverford to five hits over five innings, struck out two, and did not allow a run for her first career victory for the Blue Jays. Varrato went 3-for-4 in game two and tied Brown with a team-high four RBIs. Wilkinson and McKee both had two hits each and Ritter was a perfect 3-for-3 with a stolen base.

The softball team plays the College of Saint Elizabeth tomorrow morning at 8 a.m.
