Lesko awarded Landmark Men's Indoor Track Senior Scholar Athlete

TOWSON, Md. -- While Andrew Lesko enjoyed a successful senior indoor season on the track for the Elizabethtown College men's track & field team, he has continued to excel in the area of academics, too. In an announcement from the Landmark Conference office, Lesko was awarded the Men's Indoor Track & Field Senior Scholar Athlete.

Coming off a cross country season in which he placed fifth at the Landmark Conference Championships, his highest championship meet finish, Lesko ran just as strong indoors.

In two consecutive meets leading up to the Landmark Conference Indoor Championships, Lesko set personal best marks in a pair of events. At Bucknell in late January, Lesko set his new mile PR at 4:29.61, cracking 4:30 for the first time in his career. A week later at Ursinus' Frank Colden Invitational, the senior ran 8:57.11 in the 3k to take ninth and slide under the 9:00-minute mark for the first time.

Lesko had two weeks, then, to prepare for the 3,000-meter, 5,000-meter double at the conference meet. As it turned out, it was no problem at all for the Mohnton, Pa. native. Lesko wore down the field in the 5k, eventually pulling away to win his first career individual gold medal. His winning time was 15:58.52 for his second 5,000-meter victory of the indoor season.

His winning ways didn't stop at the 5k. Lesko then dominated the 3k race at the end of the meet, crossing the line unchallenged for his second gold of the day in 9:04.67. His two individual golds earned the Governor Mifflin grad co-Track Athlete of the Year with Matt Gass of Susquehanna.

Lesko's success on the track is also mirrored by the success in the classroom. He is a political science major at Elizabethtown with minors in international studies, French, and history. Lesko is also the team's acting student athlete mentor (SAM).

The Landmark Conference selects 20 senior scholar athletes each year to recognize the top student-athlete in each sport based on academics and athletics. Landmark Senior Scholar Athletes must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20 and are selected by a committee of conference officers, athletic directors, and sports information directors.
