HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -- Elizabethtown women's tennis saved its best performance for last, rolling to an 8-1 win over Gordon College in its Spring Break finale Friday at the Chaplin Park Tennis Center in Hilton Head Island.

The Blue Jays swept six singles matches and won 2 of 3 in doubles to subdue the Fighting Scots, who reached the semifinals of The Commonwealth Coast Conference back in the fall.

Senior Taylor Helsel went over 80 career combined victories with wins at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles.

Helsel and Lenea Riehl put away Gordon's No. 1 duo of Justine Hanson and Kaelyn Hall, 8-3, to put the Blue Jays ahead from the start.

The Fighting Scots (8-7) edged E-town at No. 3 doubles, 8-6, after the Jays' Amber Burd and Laura Gribble came within a point of tying the match 7-7.

Elizabethtown (2-3) quickly got the point back when Madison McCall and Meghan Chemidlin defeated Haley Bean and Gabby Brucker, 8-5, at No. 2, to finish the week 4-0 together.

Helsel and Riehl carried their dominant play into singles, where they were two of five Blue Jays to register wins in straight sets.

Riehl was first off with her best effort of the trip, a 6-1, 6-2 triumph against Bean at No. 3. Helsel, who won her 80th career combined match in doubles, got to 81 with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Hanson.

McCall completed an unbeaten afternoon, holding off Hall 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 in a super tiebreaker to claim career combined win No. 97. She went 6-2 between singles and doubles while in Hilton Head Island.

The only Blue Jay with a better record this week was Chemidlin, who capped a perfect Spring Break with a pair of 6-3 set victories against Brucker. Chemidlin was a combined 8-0 and the sophomore is an impressive 26-4 in singles since arriving at E-town.

Burd claimed a 6-3, 6-4 win over Emily Ontiveros at fifth singles and freshman Sarah Donner, playing in her first career match, beat Liann Van Volkinburg 7-5, 6-0 at No. 6.

The Blue Jays return to Pennsylvania Saturday. They'll resume their schedule on Monday, March 20, at Lebanon Valley.
