Women's tennis scores road victory at Messiah

GRANTHAM, Pa. – Lauren Berry captured her 30th career doubles win as Elizabethtown women's tennis won for the third time in its last four matches, 7-2, at Messiah Tuesday afternoon.

Berry and No. 2 doubles ally Sam Procak blanked their Messiah counterparts 8-0 to give the Blue Jays (5-3) an early lift.

E-town increased its lead to 2-0 on an 8-6 victory from Madison McCall and Taylor Helsel at No. 1, but Messiah stole third doubles 9-8 (6) in the tiebreaker.

The small setback wouldn't make much of a difference. The Blue Jays won five straight in singles, clinching the victory with freshman Amber Burd's 6-2, 7-5 win over Emily Doron at No. 6.

Procak started singles with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Carly Dove at No. 4. It was the sophomore's third 6-0, 6-0 win in eight matches this spring and first since March 3.

Berry joined the school's 30/30 club with her doubles win and improved her career singles record to 31-9 by handling Kaitlyn Russell 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3.

Following Burd's victory at No. 6, Meghan Chemidlin pulled away from Sydney Schandel at fifth singles, 6-4, 6-3, for her team-leading ninth win of the season. Taylor Helsel advanced her record to 7-4 when her opponent retired in the second set.

Messiah's Ashli Livermore took a point for Messiah (3-5) at No. 1 singles.

A pair of crucial matches are on the horizon this weekend for the Jays. They'll face Landmark Conference opponents Juniata and Susquehanna on Saturday and Sunday. First serve is 1 p.m. each day, with Senior Day slated for Sunday.
