Blue Jays pull through in singles at Moravian

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Elizabethtown women's tennis stayed unbeaten in Landmark Conference play by winning 5-of-6 singles matches to beat Moravian 6-3 Saturday in Bethlehem.

For the first time since a 9-0 loss to regionally-ranked Randolph-Macon back on March 30, the Blue Jays (12-3, 6-0 Landmark) trailed after doubles.

But, clutch performances from Elizabethtown's 2-6 singles players were enough to get the job done and run the team's winning streak to nine matches.

Lauren Berry and Sam Procak were the lone winners for E-town in doubles, shutting out Aisling Doyle and Roberta Scantlebury, 8-0, at No. 2 for their eighth consecutive victory together.

Taylor Helsel pulled the Blue Jays even 2-2 with her 14th singles win of the year, 6-0, 6-1, over Skylar Oliwa at No. 2. Though Moravian would briefly take the lead again with a top flight victory by Brittney Eady, the rest of the matches went to Elizabethtown.

Berry collected a 6-3, 6-4 win over Courtnie Lambert at No. 3, and Sam Procak was in control start-to-finish at No. 4, where she beat Caitlin Adams 6-1, 6-0.

Freshman Laura Gribble put together matching 6-2 sets in a win over Grace Bailly at sixth singles, while classmate Meghan Chemdilin held off Aisling Doyle in three sets at No. 5, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, to run her record to 16-3 on the season.

The Blue Jays play an exhibition match Sunday at Harford Community College. The Fighting Owls, members of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) are not a four-year degree granting institution, thus team and individual win-loss records from tomorrow's match will not count towards individual and career records. Match time in Bel Air, Md., is scheduled for noon.
