Regionally-ranked Blue Jays handle Drew in Landmark opener

MADISON, N.J. – The Elizabethtown College women's tennis team, ranked 15th in the ITA Atlantic South Region, opened Landmark Conference play with an 8-1 victory at Drew Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Jays, preseason favorites to repeat as league champions, bounced back from Wednesday's loss to now regionally-ranked Randolph Macon with authority.

E-town's third doubles team of Erin Clay and Meghan Chemidlin won by an 8-2 score and the second doubles tandem of Lauren Berry and Sam Procak followed suit.

Madison McCall and Taylor Helsel finished off the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win over Ty Ty Nguyen and Jessica Cheng at No. 1.

McCall moved to within five singles wins of 10th on Elizabethtown's career wins list after claiming her 40th, Saturday, 6-1, 6-0, over Katie Marshall in the top flight match.

Elizabethtown (4-3, 1-0 Landmark) went on to win five of the six singles matches to remain perfect in eight Landmark regular season matches since joining the conference prior to last season.

Helsel defeated Nguyen 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2, Berry held off Cheng 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 and Procak picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win over Kirby Clark at No. 4.

At fifth singles, Chemidlin won a super tiebreaker against Megan Jarvis 6-4, 4-6, 10-8.

The Rangers (3-5, 0-2 Landmark) scored their lone win at No. 6 singles, where Kathryn Swenor earned a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Amber Burd.

The women's tennis team will head out of conference to face Messiah in Grantham Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
