Blue Jays best Misericordia for 10th win

Results

DALLAS, Pa. – Elizabethtown College women's tennis reached double-digit victories for the 12th season in a row Sunday by going on the road to defeat Misericordia, 7-2, in a non-conference match.

A couple of Blue Jays hit round numbers in the win, with junior Madison McCall recording her 80th career combined victory (singles and doubles) and senior Lauren Berry picking up her 70th combined victory.

E-town (10-3) set the tone for its eighth straight win in doubles, where two of its pairings won without much resistance from the Cougars (3-2).

Without regular No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles player Sam Procak, coach Matt Helsel shuffled his lineup with positive results.

Berry stepped up to No. 1 doubles, where she joined Taylor Helsel for an 8-1 win over Carly Young and Nellie Chmil. Helsel's regular partner, Madison McCall, slid down to No. 2 to team with freshman Meghan Chemidlin for a matching 8-1 triumph. Misericordia was able to steal a point at No. 3 doubles.

The Blue Jays overpowered the Cougars in singles, too, winning all but the No. 1 match.

Helsel and Chemidlin kept at their winning ways, each running their unbeaten streak to seven matches. Helsel beat Gabby Belles 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 and Chemidlin earned a 6-4, 6-1 win over Linsey Parks at No. 4.

Berry registered a 6-1, 6-0 win over Chmil at No. 3 and freshman Amber Burd claimed a straight set victory over Ashley Casem at fifth singles 6-1, 6-2.

Fellow rookie Kaitlyn O'Connor evened her season record at 2-2 by fighting through tiebreakers in her first two sets at sixth singles and then holding on in the super tiebreaker against Amberlynn Habich 6-7 (6), 7-6 (0), 10-5.

Elizabethtown has won 10 matches or more each season since 2004, which was Helsel's third season leading the women's program. During that time, the Blue Jays have won nine conference championships and qualified for seven NCAA Division III tournaments.

The Blue Jays will go for their 11th win of the season when Muhlenberg visits the Alumni Courts Tuesday at 4 p.m.
