Jays sweep Kentucky Wesleyan, stumble against Tiffin

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Elizabethtown College women's tennis blanked Kentucky Wesleyan 9-0 Thursday, but took an 8-1 loss to Tiffin Friday afternoon in concluding its Spring Break trip to Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Elizabethtown had its way with the undermanned Panthers in earning its first sweep of the 2015-16 season.

Meghan Chemidlin and Erin Clay shutout Brittany Johnston and Rachel Kinsolving, 8-0, at No. 2 doubles, while Madison McCall and Taylor Helsel dropped just one game to Kentucky Wesleyan's No. 1 pair in an 8-1 victory.

The Blue Jays (2-2) also received a win by default at No. 3, as the Panthers were unable to field an opposing duo.

Singles belonged to the Blue and Gray as well.

Sam Procak (No. 2) and Amber Burd (No. 4) were 6-0, 6-0 winners. Freshmen Chemidlin (No. 3) and Laura Gribble (No. 5) won 12-of-13 games for straight set triumphs.

McCall was tested in the first set against her top-flight opponent, Liz Greer. The junior from Bath, Pa., prevailed in a tiebreaker 7-6 (5) and slammed the door with a 6-0 win in the second.

Nationally-ranked Tiffin prevented the Blue Jays from ending their trip south on a high note.

The NCAA Division II Dragons, ranked 49th in the Oracle/ITA Division II Rankings and sixth in the ITA Midwest Region Rankings, breezed through doubles before taking 5-of-6 singles matches.

Gribble captured Elizabethtown's only point with a 6-1, 5-7, 10-6 victory over Cassandra Weidner at No. 6 singles.

McCall went up against a ranked opponent in Tiffin's Caroline Nelhage (40th in D2), taking a game off Nelhage in the second set of a 6-0, 6-1 loss. Helsel won three games in her 6-2, 6-1 defeat to Valentina Mazzola at second singles.

Elizabethtown, which is ranked 18th in the ITA Atlantic South Region of the Division III rankings, resumes its schedule on Saturday, March 19, at Misericordia.
