Helsel earns win No. 50, Jays open spring with victory

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Taylor Helsel earned her 50th career combined win Monday afternoon and Elizabethtown women's tennis opened its spring break trip with an 8-1 victory over St. John Fisher.

Playing concurrently with the men's team, the women started with singles play.

Helsel led start-to-finish at No. 2 singles in a 6-2, 6-1 win over Katey Padden and joined up with Madison McCall to shutout Fisher's Sarah Sorrentino and Olivia Rotondo, 8-0, at No. 1 doubles for her 50th triumph. The junior has a 23-11 singles record and 27-18 doubles record.

Elizabethtown (1-0) made quick work of the Cardinals in singles, winning five-of-six matches.

Sam Procak won all 12 games in a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Rotondo, and McCall downed Sorrentino 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1.

Freshman Meghan Chemidlin extended E-town's lead to 4-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Caroline Seaberg, while classmate Amber Burd went to the super tiebreaker to complete a 6-7 (4), 6-4, 10-8 comeback over Eileen Fleming at No. 5.

Claire Hermann got St. John Fisher (1-11) in the win column by staging a rally of her own to defeat Brooke Hillriegel 5-7, 6-1, 10-1.

The Blue Jays were just as strong in doubles, following the McCall/Helsel shutout with an 8-3 win by Procak and Erin Clay and No. 2 and an 8-1 decision by Meghan Chemidlin and Laura Gribble at No. 3.

E-town has faced St. John Fisher in Hilton Head Island each of the last four seasons, winning all four matches by 9-0 or 8-1 scores. Coach Matt Helsel's team, which is currently ranked 18th in the ITA Atlantic South Region, will play Mount Union Wednesday at noon.
