Blue Jays break away from Lancaster Bible

LANCASTER, Pa. – Elizabethtown withstood a scrappy Lancaster Bible bunch in the first two sets and took advantage of 12 Charger errors in the third to complete its second straight sweep, 3-0 (26-24, 25-20, 25-17) in a non-conference match Friday night.

A back-and-forth first set culminated with timely kills for E-town and a few untimely errors by the hosts. The Blue Jays (2-0) trailed 18-17 after the Chargers ran off four straight points, but seniors Karley Ice and Juliana Mowen each had kills to put E-town back in front 20-18. Freshman Janae Moran added a kill and the Jays were aided by six LBC errors in the late going to escape with a 26-24 first set decision despite hitting -.022.

With Mowen and Kristina Smith connecting for three kills each, the guests performed much better in the second, hitting a match best .242 en route to a 25-20 win. E-town was well on its way to the set victory, leading 17-12 after consecutive kills from Mackenzie Garner and Smith, but LBC fought back again, tying the score at 19, before the Blue Jays made a final push to take command.

Rookies collected all seven kills in the third, led by Sarah Schneider's three. Lancaster Bible (0-2) came undone with 12 errors (25 for the match), allowing the Jays to cruise to the sweep.

Smith and Moran shared top-kill honors with six apiece. Smith also recorded a team-high 11 digs, while Shannon Deck (10) and Brynne Kirsch (10) were in double figures. Mowen added five kills, Garner four, and Ice and Schneider three each. Steph High missed a double-double by a single dig, tallying 21 assists and nine digs.

Myranda Kemrer led Lancaster Bible with eight kills and nine digs.

Saturday's portion of the Crosstown Crossover will be held at Penn State Berks, with the Blue Jays aiming for a 4-0 start. They'll take on Franklin & Marshall at noon, followed by the host Lions at 2 p.m.
