Women's tennis opens fall season at King's Invitational

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Elizabethtown College women's tennis kicked off its fall season with singles play Saturday at the King's Invitational.

Flights one and two were able to complete matches into the semifinals, but flights 3-7 got no further than the quarterfinals. The tournament concludes Sunday with the remaining singles matches and doubles play.

Taylor Helsel, representing the Blue Jays at No. 1, earned a 6-2, 6-3 win over Misericordia's Carly Young in the quarterfinals before falling to Muhlenberg's Sara Finger, 6-0, 6-2 in the semis.

Freshmen Kaitlyn O'Connor, Meghan Chemidlin and Laura Gribble are all in the running for flight titles.

O'Connor was a 6-0, 6-4 winner over Lauren DeRenzi of King's (Pa.) in the quarterfinals at No. 3 singles. Chemidlin took care of Marywood's Melani Kobela 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 4 quarters. Gribble received a quarterfinal bye at fifth singles.

E-town's No. 6 and No. 7 entries both made their collegiate debuts Saturday. Amber Burd fell 6-2, 6-3 to Brittany Gould of Muhlenberg, while Caity Stencler took the middle set in a 4-6, 7-6, 0-1 (4) loss to Marywood's Emily Zarilli.

No. 2 Erin Clay dropped a 6-1, 6-4 decision to Marywood's Abby Doud in the semifinals to round out the Blue Jays' contingent.
