Volleyball starts with sweep of Albright

READING, Pa.Mackenzie Garner and Juliana Mowen combined for 18 kills Tuesday evening as Elizabethtown volleyball breezed by Albright 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-19) on the road to open its new season.

The Blue Jays never trailed in the match and only briefly played from behind in the third set.

Seven different players factored into E-town's (1-0) 14 first-set kills, led by Garner, Mowen and Megan McNaul with three each. Elizabethtown broke free from a 10-10 tie by reeling off eight of the next nine points, highlighted by a pair of Steph High kills, as well as a kill and a block from Garner.

Three attacking errors and two Mowen aces helped the Jays close the first set with five straight points.

Elizabethtown hit a strong .370 (14 kills, 4 errors, 27 attempts) in the first set, and while it couldn't quite replicate that in the second, Mowen's six kills, along with three from Garner and Kristina Smith, and one from Victoria Leidy helped the visitors hold on for a three-point victory in the set. Shannon Deck collected seven of her team-high 12 digs in the set and Leidy provided a solo block.

Kellie Hill's kill gave Albright a 15-14 lead in the third, but the Blue Jays answered with 11 of the final 16 points to complete the sweep. Smith shined in the final set of her debut, ripping off three kills and two aces, while Garner's consistency continued with three more kills. Elizabethtown finished with a .200 hitting percentage for the night to go along with 40 kills and eight aces.

High recorded 31 assists and three kills, while Smith finished with six kills, two aces, a block and four digs. Mowen hit .438 (9-2-16) and McNaul had five kills. Karley Ice and Leidy joined High with three kills each.

The Blue Jays, who improved to 31-6 all-time against Albright, will travel to Lancaster Bible Friday evening at 7.
