Blue Jays advance to first Landmark Championship

Results

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Elizabethtown College women's tennis is back in familiar territory, but as the new kid on the block. The top-seeded Blue Jays defeated fourth-seeded Catholic, 5-2, at the Alumni Courts Wednesday afternoon, advancing to their first Landmark Championship match and 11th consecutive conference title match overall.

The Blue Jays (15-3) left the Commonwealth Conference as the five-time defending champions, but things haven't changed much in their first forray against Landmark competition. Elizabethtown won all seven league matches in the regular season, extending its conference winning streak to 40 matches.

Wednesday the Jays took two out of three doubles matches to take early control.

Madison McCall and Sam Procak were nearly unbeatable at No. 3 doubles, collecting an 8-1 win over Emma Needham and Sarah MacLean. First and second doubles would be much closer, however. Catholic (12-6) tied the score briefly with Liz Harvey and Laura Torsiello edging Christine Evangelista and Kaitlyn Pellegrino, 8-6, in the top flight match, but Lauren Berry and Taylor Helsel rallied past CUA's Eliana Martinez and Jenna Gietl, 8-6, at No. 2 to restore E-town's lead.

McCall pushed E-town closer to the title match with a 6-1, 6-1 win at fourth singles, and the Blue Jays finished the Cards with wins by No. 6 Helsel and No. 1 Evangelista.

Helsel was a 6-4, 6-2 straight set victor over Maria Flores, and Evangelista avenged an earlier season loss to Harvey, in a 6-3, 6-1 triumph.

Elizabethtown will host second-seeded Scranton, a 5-4 winner over third-seeded Juniata, in the championship match Saturday at 1 p.m.
