Salisbury defeats WTEN in meeting of regionally-ranked teams

SALISBURY, Md. – One of the toughest tests of Elizabethtown's schedule proved too tough to overcome Sunday. Salisbury, ranked eighth in the ITA Atlantic South Region, defeated the 19th-ranked Blue Jays, 8-1, in a non-conference match at the SU Tennis Courts.

Taylor Helsel won her second singles match in a row to help the Jays (9-3) avoid a shutout. The second-year player downed Charlotte Walker 6-4, 7-5 at No. 6 for her 11th victory of the season.

Salisbury (13-5) swept the three doubles matches, with the region's 10th-ranked pair of Natalie Savage and Katie Youlios winning 8-1 at first doubles for the hosts.

E-town's No. 2 team of Lauren Berry and Helsel claimed five games in an 8-5 loss to Walker and Claudia Lohn. The No. 3 tandem of Madison McCall and Sam Procak duplicated that in an 8-5 defeat at the hands of Megan Soderlund and Allison Lutz.

McCall pushed Soderlund to a second-set tiebreaker at fourth singles before falling 6-2, 7-6 (6), and Kaitlyn Pellegrino hung tough against Youlios, droping a 7-5, 6-4 decision at second singles.

The Blue Jays start a string of four straight Landmark Conference matches Wednesday when they host Goucher at 4 p.m.
