Pellegrino wins 100th, Jays take Landmark opener from Moravian

Results

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Senior Kaitlyn Pellegrino became the 10th player in Elizabethtown College women's tennis history to reach 100 career combined victories Sunday in the Blue Jays' 7-2 Landmark win over Moravian at the Alumni Courts.

Pellegrino and No. 1 doubles parter Christine Evangelista were put to the test by the Greyhounds' Brittney Eady and Roberta Scantlebury, who were looking for their first win of the season together.

With Elizabethtown (7-2, 1-0 Landmark) already ahead 2-0 after wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, Moravian took an 8-7 lead at No. 1. Eady and Scantlebury could not break serve, however, as the Blue Jay duo tied the match at 8-8 and sent it to a tiebreaker. Evangelista and Pellegrino, both fourth-year players, took control in the tiebreaker to secure Pellegrino's milestone win 9-8 (3).

Pellegrino joined her doubles partner as active Blue Jays with 100 wins. The Williamsport native improved to 58-31 all-time in doubles, moving out of a sixth-place tie and into a share of fifth in team history with Allison Burkhardt. Pellegrino also owns 42 singles wins, though she was later defeated 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 by Sophia Osbourne Sunday.

Lauren Berry and Taylor Helsel doubled up Skylar Oliwa and Osbourne, 8-4, at No. 2 for their team-leading seventh win of the season (7-1) and sixth in a row. Sophomore Madison McCall and freshman Sam Procak are working well as a tandem, too, emerging with their sixth win in seven tries this spring, 8-2, at No. 3 against Caitlin Adams and Courtnie Lambert.

Moravian (4-4, 0-2 Landmark) won the top two singles flights, but the Blue Jays took flights 3-6 in straight sets.

McCall extended her singles winning streak to seven matches by defeating Lambert 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4.

Berry beat Oliwa 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 and Sarah Calabro was equally impressive in a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Adams at No. 5. Helsel got by Scantlebury 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6.

Sunday's matchup featured two teams that figure to be in the discussion for a Landmark tournament spot at the end of April. E-town was picked second in the Preseason Coaches Poll, while the Hounds were fourth.

Elizabethtown won't return to the court until Monday, April 6, at Juniata. Match time is 2 p.m.
