Blue Jays go 1-1 at Dutchmen Quad

ANNVILLE, Pa.Mackenzie Garner totaled 40 kills in two matches and Steph High set a new career-high with 55 assists against Lebanon Valley as the Elizabethtown College volleyball team split in Saturday action at the Dutchmen Quad. The Blue Jays fell, 3-2, in a back-and-forth tilt against the host Dutchmen before sweeping Montclair State, 3-0.

Garner topped 20 kills for the second time this season with a match-high 21 in the loss to LVC (16-9), while High set up 55 of the Blue Jays' 65 kills. The senior setter reached 50 assists for the second time in her career and first since setting her previous career-high with 50 against Swarthmore Sept. 19, 2014.

Janae Moran hit .303 with 15 kills and Sarah Schneider added 14 kills on 34 attempts an Elizabethtown side (16-13) that won the opening set 25-23, before dropping the next two 25-17 and 25-22. Behind 15 kills to LVC's six, the visitors evened the match with a 25-20 win in the fourth set, but the Dutchmen would prevail in the fifth, 15-9.

E-town's 65 kills were its second most in a match this season and marked the third time in 2015 that the team had eclipsed 60. Victoria Leidy contributed a season-high seven kills of her own to supplement the Jays' double figure trio of freshmen.

Shannon Deck paced the defense with 13 digs, while High was a dig short of a double-double. For the seventh time this season and second match in a row, Elizabethtown served up nine aces. Three came from Moran, with a pair from Megan McNaul and Anna Simpson.

Greta Weidemoyer (18), Alli Quirk (17) and Amber Deshong (10) all had double-digit kill matches for LVC, while Rachel Moltz put up a double-double of 29 assists and 13 digs.

The Blue Jays would not leave Sorrentino Gymnasium empty-handed. Garner bewildered Montclair State (15-9) with 19 kills on 31 attempts for a .516 hitting percentage and Elizabethtown swept the Red Hawks 25-21, 25-17, 25-17.

Garner was the only player on either side to collect double figures in the kills department, while Schneider added seven. Moran and High each tallied five for the Blue and Gray.

High notched 24 assists and MSU couldn't get a handle on Moran's serve to the tune of five aces for the State College native.

Elizabethtown is expected to return to Thompson Gymnasium for its Dig Pink match Wednesday at 7 p.m., against Dickinson.
