Volleyball wraps up Landmark play with split

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Elizabethtown volleyball took home a win and a loss from Catholic Saturday, falling to the host Cardinals 3-1, before bouncing back to sweep Goucher, 3-0, in the final Landmark Conference weekend of 2015.

Freshman Mackenzie Garner and senior Juliana Mowen each had 11 kills for E-town in its loss to Catholic, Steph High added a double-double of 33 assists and 16 digs and Shannon Deck had 23 digs.

The Blue Jays dropped the opening set 25-16, before playing much better in the second to tie the match with a 25-18 victory. Catholic would overpower Elizabethtown in the third and fourth, however, winning by 25-10 and 25-16 scores.

Maria Juelle led CUA (12-15, 3-3 Landmark) with 17 kills and 11 digs and Mary Paige Nesfeder totaled 10 kills.

Elizabethtown also got 10 digs and three aces from senior Megan McNaul.

Despite a .067 hitting percentage, an E-town (14-11, 2-5 Landmark) team battling multiple injuries bypassed Goucher in three sets.

Chelsea Gallagher, who came on to serve up two aces in the Catholic match, exploded for five against the Gophers (9-17, 0-7 Landmark). The sophomore would lead the team in digs as well with 19. McNaul had a team-high eight kills and seven digs, Janae Moran chipped in seven kills and Emily Sexton smacked six to go with 15 digs.

The Blue Jays, who travel to Millersville for a non-conference match Tuesday, held off Goucher by three points in the first set, 25-22, before winning the second 25-19 and pulling out the third 25-22. With their loss to Catholic, the Jays were eliminated from postseason contention, while the Cards went on to beat Moravian for the final playoff spot.
