Millersville tops feisty Blue Jays

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Elizabethtown put forth a gritty effort Tuesday evening at Division II Millersville, but the pay off never came. The Marauders sent the Blue Jays to a 3-0 loss (25-20, 25-18, 25-23).

Janae Moran totaled 11 kills, Juliana Mowen 10 and Victoria Leidy six for the visitors, who saw their record dip to 14-12 with the defeat. Millersville improved to a game over .500 at 12-11 with the non-conference victory.

E-town's best threat came in the third set when it led eight different times. A Moran kill assisted by Steph High pushed the Blue Jays in front 14-13, but four consecutive errors, a Kelsi Ceriana kill and Taylor Smith ace flipped the set in Millersville's favor.

The set was far from over, however, as Megan McNaul and Mowen registered kills, Shannon Deck served up an ace and Elizabethtown took advantage of a few MU misplays to get back within 20-19.

Mowen and Moran added kills to cap an 8-2 run that put the Jays ahead 22-21 and had them on the verge of forcing a fourth set.

It wasn't to be. Emily Kaledas' two kills, an ace from Erika Green and a kill from Erin Harman guided Millersville to a 25-23 win that protected the sweep.

Elizabethtown, which trailed by as many as six in the first set, got as close as 24-20 on Mowen's only kill of the set. Leidy led all Blue Jays with three kills in the opener and a .400 hitting percentage.

Mowen wound up hitting .474 for the match (10-1-19) and registered her fourth double-double of the season after supplying 13 digs.

McNaul and Deck each had 10 digs for the Blue and Gray, which held a 55-48 advantage over Millersville in that category. Elizabethtown also out-killed the Marauders 40-38, but MU made just 10 attacking errors on the night in hitting .246 (38-10-114).

The home team also had seven aces, while E-town was slowed by nine service errors.

High's 36 assists, which led all players, pushed her career total to 2,023. The Denver, Pa., native is the eighth player in school history to eclipse the 2,000-assist mark.

Kaledas and Harman paced Millersville's offense with 10 kills apiece. Grace Dawson provided a double-double of 31 assists and 10 digs, while Brooklyn Smith had 14 digs. Taylor Smith's five aces were a match-high.

E-town heads to Lebanon Valley Friday and Saturday for the Dutchmen Quad. The Jays will open with Wilkes Friday evening at 6 p.m.
