ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa—Prior to the game Elizabethtown Blue Jays field hockey team hosted a Youth Night for local kids to meet the team, pass the ball around, and walk out Etown and Hood.
In a thrilling shootout, the Blue Jays pulled past the Blazers to win 3-2. Kaylie Noel, Carly Schumacher and Sophie Myers scored their shootout goals to clinch the victory.
The Blue Jays and Blazers got off to a slow start as both teams shared possession evenly on the offensive end.
Etown came in firing at the start of the third quarter, dominating possession. Sophomore Sara Watson got the Blue Jays on the board first at the 35:48 mark. Watson made a diving effort around the Hood goalie after receiving a ball from Myers that was sent into the circle.
The Blue Jays added another onto the board extending the lead to 2-0 after a scramble in front of the goalie allowed Watson to tap it in. Her second goal came only three minutes after her previous goal.
At the 42:45 mark, Hood answered back and got their first goal of the game. In the fourth quarter, Senior goalkeeper Lily DeBlasio made crucial saves in goal after facing nine shots and seven penalty corners. With 35 seconds left in the game, the Blazers tied the game, sending it into double overtime.
At the end of the two hard-fought overtime periods, the score remained 2-2, sending the game into a shootout. The Blue Jays dominated the shootout, scoring three of their five goals.
Elizabethtown field hockey will be back on the road Saturday, September 26th to face off against Wilkes in their first Landmark Conference game.
