CHESTER, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown field hockey team opened their season against Widener with a win on the road. Freshman, Avery Mettle scored her first goal of the season and of her career.
Both teams' defenses held each other to two shots in the first quarter. The Pride were the first to break away with a scoring opportunity at 17:18 making the score 1-0. Etown answered back less than a minute later when Mettle drove a shot in from center circle.
The Blue Jays kept the momentum going in the third quarter when Hailey Meyer sent a ball into the circle, giving Hannah Long the opportunity to pull around the goalie and score.
With 8:46 left in the third quarter, the Pride were given a chance to tie the game when Widener was awarded a stroke. Goalie Lily DeBlasio knocked the high left shot down leaving the score at 2-1.
DeBlasio had eight saves, with six coming during crucial moments in the third and fourth quarter.
Elizabethtown will host Simmons on Friday, September 4 at 7 p.m. in their home opener.
