ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa.—The Elizabethtown men's volleyball team split with St. John Fisher and Bethany (W.Va.) in thrilling matches. The Blue Jays fell, 3-2 against the Cardinals before sweeping the Bison, 3-0.
GAME 1: ELIZABETHTOWN 2, ST. JOHN FISHER 3 (22-25, 25-18, 25-14, 20-25, 11-15)
St. John Fisher took set one 25-22 in a close match before Etown came back to win set two. The Blue Jays led early and then doubled their lead to 16-8 midway through the set. Kills from
Josh McCoy,
Arun Gopinath, and
Max Sears brought their lead out to, 19-12. The Cardinals were unable to catch up as the Jays earned the two final points via errors to win, 25-18.
Etown easily won set three, 25-14. The Blue Jays led 9-6 after four straight from Etown. A 5-0 run from the Blue Jays put them ahead 16-10. A 6-1 run closed out the set as
Logan Smith and
Mason Boyer put down kills to end the set, 25-14. The Blue Jays lost momentum early in the fourth set and were unable to catch up as they fell, 25-20.
The two teams traded points to start off the fifth set. Two Cardinal errors tied up the set at 5-5 for Etown. Kills from Gopinath and McCoy again tied up the set before a SJF point forced the teams to switch sides. Four in a row from the Cardinals helped SJF secure the 15-11 over Etown to win the match, 3-2.
GAME 2: ELIZABETHTOWN 3, BETHANY 0 (25-18, 25-18, 28-26)
Etown jumped to a 10-4 lead to start off the first set vs. the Bison. Kills from
Hugh Rogers,
Declan Keller, and
Cole Burkhardt helped extend the team's lead to 18-10. After trading points, Keller smacked down a kill to end the set, 25-18.
The Blue Jays again started off the next set with a substantial lead before Bethany came back with one at 9-8. A 5-1 run from Etown pulled the Jays ahead, 16-10.
Reid Maas,
Samuel Ulrich, and Burkhardt tallied three straight kills to bring the score to 21-14. Ulrich put down the final kill giving Etown the 25-18 win.
Bethany gained momentum to start off the third set as the two teams traded points. The Bison then took an 11-8 lead. The Bison would hold on to the lead until the Blue Jays recorded three straight points to bring the score to 22-21. The two went back-n-forth to finish the set which forced extra points. Etown came out on top, 28-26 with the two final points.
Etown travels to Juniata on Wednesday for a CVC match.
