Blue Jays squeak past Rangers in overtime

MADISON, N.J. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team squeaked past Drew in overtime Wednesday night at Baldwin Gymnasium, 60-59. Makenna Mummert had a team-high 17 points for the Blue Jays in the win.

Elizabethtown had to play catchup after falling behind by 10 points through one quarter, 22-12. The Rangers' hot start leveled out over the course of the next three quarters as the Jays worked their way back.

Still trailing by double figures with timing winding down in the first half, Mummert drilled a last-second three to make it a seven-point game at the break, 33-26. 11 of Mummert's 17 came in the first two quarters.

Gianna Pica hit a three to begin the third, but Etown went on a 10-0 run culminating in Allyia Kennedy's layup that tied the game at 36-36 with 6:46 to go in the third. That came off an assist from Cadence Anderson.

Drew was able to extend the lead back to as many as six and led by the same margin going into the fourth, 50-44.

The Rangers struggled from the field, hitting only 1 of 14 shot attempts in the fourth. Though Elizabethtown didn't shoot a ton better, it was enough to close the gap. Gonzalez's jumper with 4:07 remaining tied the game at 51-51, the first time the Jays were equal in the fourth. The sophomore then hit a three after a Drew turnover to give EC a lead with under four minutes left.

Amy Rachilla tied the game back up with a three of her own, but neither side scored the rest of the game and a late shot from Elizabethtown didn't go as overtime was needed to settle the night's conference matchup.

The Blue Jays went ahead by as many as four on Ella Gordon's free throws, but the Rangers came back and took the lead with 1:28 left on a three.

Gonzalez was fouled with 1:05 to go and knocked down both foul shots to put Elizabethtown back in front, 60-59.

Drew had a chance to win it with a second left, but Mummert grabbed the miss and secured the win for the Jays.

Ellie Fasick added 13 points and Kennedy finished with 12 for EC.

The women's basketball team plays at Scranton on Saturday, February 7, at 4 p.m.
