Wilkes slips past men's basketball on Senior Day

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College men's basketball team had a halftime lead over Wilkes on Saturday in Thompson Gymnasium, but the Colonels worked their way back and overtook the Blue Jays in the second half to steal a key Landmark Conference matchup, 81-74. Austin Finarelli had 21 points to lead Etown.

It was a scintillating start for Elizabethtown as Augie Brody was on fire from beyond the arc, hitting five first-half three-pointers after getting the start on Senior Day.

The Blue Jays built up as high as a 14-point lead midway through the half after Finarelli's fast break layup that forced Wilkes into a timeout. EC led 30-16 with 10:07 remaining in the first half.

The Colonels methodically worked their way back and only trailed by four at halftime as Etown's high shooting percentage to start and leveled out over the rest of the half.

Wilkes was able to take its first lead of the game with a little over 11 minutes left in the game on Colin Ackerman's free throws.

It was a tight game, no more than a two-possession affair as time wound down in Thompson. Ackerman hit a key three with 39 seconds to go that ultimately put the Colonels ahead for good. Lucas Lesko and Ackerman hit free throws down the stretch as Elizabethtown couldn't overcome the deficit in the end.

Finarelli posted a game-high 21 points with Brody also in double figures at 15.

The Blue Jays are on the road at Catholic on Wednesday, February 18.
