ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa.— A hat trick from Hannah Long wasn't enough to give the Elizabethtown field hockey team their first landmark conference win as they fell, 4-3 in double overtime to Susquehanna.
The game began with a scoreless first quarter. Etown outshot Susquehanna 7-1 and they earned themselves two penalty corners.
At the 10:44 mark in the second quarter, Sara Watson sent a pass across the face of the goal. Waiting at the goal was Long to slam the ball into the goal, giving Etown the lead. At the end of the second quarter, Susquehanna scored to make the game equal.
The Blue Jays didn't give them the lead for long as they struck back less than two minutes later. Long got her second goal of the game off an assist from Caroline Hartley during a penalty corner.
Both teams got to work quickly at the beginning of the third quarter. Etown earned themselves a penalty corner but failed to convert it. The River Hawks took advantage scoring a goal shortly after tying the game at 2-2. The Blue Jays offense got back to work scoring off another penalty corner giving themselves the lead again. A pass from Abbie Heckman to Long gave the senior a hat trick on the day.
At the 54:58 mark the River Hawks found the back of the goal to send the game into overtime. In double overtime, Susquehanna scored to win the game 4-3.
The Blue Jays will be back in conference action on Tuesday, October 3rd at Juniata College.
