Field hockey takes down Catholic in shootout

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa.-- Junior Hailey Meyer led the Elizabethtown College field hockey team to a 3-2 Landmark Conference win over Catholic. Meyer had the decisive goal in the shootout, which followed a 2-2 finish to regulation and double overtime.

The Blue Jays defense held the Cardinals for the first quarter, denying them any shots or penalty corners. The Cardinals were the first to get on the board in the beginning of the second quarter at the 16:09 mark as they got ahead 1-0 and led by the same score at halftime.

Halfway through the third quarter, the Blue Jays evened the score at 1-1 when Hannah Long smashed a shot from the top of the circle toward goal. The shot had too much pace as it deflected off a Catholic stick but still found its way into the cage. Meyer inserted the ball to Abbie Heckman, who dished to Long for her goal.

With 2:49 remaining in the fourth quarter, Meyer found the back of the net to lift the Blue Jays to a 2-1 lead. Long sent a ball down the field and Carly Schumacher battled with a defender as the ball tipped toward Meyer sprinting down the field. The junior pulled the ball to the left around the Catholic goalie and with a switch of the stick, slid a backhanded shot underneath the goalie.

The craziness had only just begun as the Cardinals tied the game up with less than two minutes remaining, forcing overtime.

Long and Calleigh Hoy each recorded shots in overtime but were unable to find the back of the net as the game went into a shootout.

Both teams saw one of their five takers score during the shootout, meaning sudden victory was needed. While Elizabethtown went second to begin, the Jays were up first in the second go round. Meyer was the one to take and she was able to beat Camryn Lowman to put the pressure on the Cardinals.

Lily DeBlasio delivered a standout performance in goal, recording eight saves before helping secure the victory for the Jays in the shootout as she stopped .

Etown will be back in action on Saturday, October 17th, as they host Lycoming for senior day at 1 p.m..
