ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team played second-ranked Scranton tough Wednesday night in Thompson Gymnasium. After a tie game at half, the Royals built up enough of a lead in the third quarter to hold off the Blue Jays in the fourth to stay unbeaten with a 59-50 over Etown.
Cadence Anderson and
Makenna Mummert each had 14 for the Jays.
Elizabethtown, who have played Scranton well at home in recent years, held the Royals to their worst shooting performance of the season. It was the first time Scranton shot under 30 percent from the floor in the game while also totaling their fewest point total of the year.
Scranton led by three after one, 11-8, before Elizabethtown outscored the Royals in the second 12-9 to make it a 20-20 game by halftime.
The Royals shot 50 percent from the floor in the third and built up a 15-point edge heading into the fourth as they looked to run away with Wednesday night's conference contest.
Etown showed no quit as they put up only the third 20-plus point quarter against the Royals this season over 12 games. The Blue Jays were able to go on a 9-0 run to start the fourth, which was started off by a three from Anderson. Mummert and
Allyia Kennedy added points for EC as they cut their deficit to six over the first three minutes of quarter number four.
The Royals went back up by 10, but Elizabethtown chipped away and
Kiley Wilhelm made it a five-point game with a little under four minutes left.
Scranton did plenty of damage at the foul line where 11 of the team's 17 points came from in the fourth quarter.
Mummert and Kennedy were each able to get the Blue Jays within four points late in the game, but the Royals hit their free throws to keep Etown at bay as they won by nine, their lowest margin of victory this season.
The Blue Jays will be on the road Saturday, January 10, at Wilkes for a 4 p.m. tip-off.
