Hot start leads to big win for women's basketball

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team shot at least 50 percent or better in three of the four quarters in Saturday's 89-43 win over Goucher at Thompson Gym. Makenna Mummert led all scorers with 16 points as the Blue Jays had five players record double figures in the victory.

Elizabethtown had nearly as many makes from the field as Goucher had attempts in the first quarter. The Blue Jays were 12-for-18 as they ran out to a 31-10 lead through the first 10 minutes of Saturday's Landmark matchup.

Etown was 19-for-34 in the first half as they led 48-22 by half. The Jays turned nine Gophers' turnovers into 13 points and led 24-14 in the paint. Allyia Kennedy had nine first-half points with Mummert and Kiley Wilhelm each contributing eight. Ellie Fasick added seven as her size gave Goucher trouble around the basket.

There was plenty of help off the bench as the reserves totaled 36 points, led by 12 each from Alex Gonzalez and Peyton Houlihan. Gonzalez drilled a pair of threes, as did Mummert, and Houlihan was a handful in the post, getting six buckets around the rim as the Gophers struggled to contain the sophomore.

The defense forced 20 turnovers, led by Danielle Kanse's three steals in just under 19 minutes, and held Goucher to just 16 made shots and .286 shooting percentage for the game.

Elizabethtown's 37 made shots are the sixth-most in a game in team history while their team shooting percentage of .597 is now third. The Blue Jays dished out 25 assists, tied for sixth-most in a game in record program history.

The Jays are at Drew on Wednesday, February 4, at 7 p.m.
