Free throw shooting keys women's basketball's win over Moravian

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team approached a team game record in foul shooting Wednesday night in a 78-66 win over Moravian at Thompson Gymnasium. The Blue Jays hit 28 of 30 free throws between six different players, including an eight-for-eight effort at the line from Ella Gordon. Makenna Mummert led all scorers with 21 points in the game.

The game was called tight as 39 personal fouls were issued and 53 combined free throws between Elizabethtown and Moravian on the night.

The Greyhounds led early on, but as the first quarter was coming to a close, the Jays grabbed the lead on Allyia Kennedy's and-one with 2:05 left. Cadence Anderson then knocked down a pair of foul shots and Kiley Wilhelm ended the first with a layup with six seconds showing. Etown was ahead 17-11 after one.

Moravian had a one-point edge in the second quarter and knocked down a couple of threes, one which helped the Greyhounds back within five after they trailed by as many as 11 in the quarter. Gordon also hit a pair of threes for the Jays in the second. She had three in the game.

Elizabethtown shot 8-for-12 from the floor in the third quarter, but Moravian was able to break up the momentum by getting to the foul line for a total of 16 free throw attempts in the third alone. Lizzie Lustig was fouled on a three-point attempt and converted all three at the line to make it a five-point game with a little over half the third to go, 40-35.

The Greyhounds continued to hang around using the foul line to do so, but the Jays were converting at the other end as well, shooting 8-for-10 from the line themselves. Gordon hit on all eight, including a pair to end the third after being fouled with 0.4 seconds left.

Etown didn't shoot well in the fourth, but did manage to keep Moravian at bay from the free throw line, going 11-for-11 as a team in the final 10 minutes.

For the game, they were 28-for-30, tied for the fifth-most in a single game in team history. Their .933 percentage from the foul line is the third-best in a single game all-time.

Gordon ended with 17 points while Wilhelm added 15 off the bench. Anderson had 10 points and eight rebounds to tie for the team-high along with Peyton Houlihan.

Elizabethtown hosts Goucher on Saturday, January 31, at 4 p.m.
