GROVE CITY, Pa.—The Elizabethtown men's volleyball team split their first away tri-match of the season. The Blue Jays fell, 3-2 to ranked Baldwin Wallace before rallying to defeat host Grove City in four set.
GAME 1: ELIZABETHTOWN 2, #15 BALDWIN WALLACE 3 (25-22, 17-25, 22-25, 25-23, 12-15)
Logan Smith and
Braydon Ambruster each totaled 14 kills and six digs.
Patrick Neyer tallied 31 assists while
Dustin Hagin grabbed 15 digs.
Elizabethtown started off the first set against the no.15 Yellow Jackets strong as the two teams traded points early. Midway through the set kills from Ambruster,
Cole Burkhardt, and
Logan Smith along with two aces but the Jays up, 15-10. Three straight from Etown extended their lead to 18-12. Through the end of the set the two went back-n-forth. Baldwin Wallace grabbed four straight points at the end but Etown earned the final point to win, 25-22. Baldwin Wallace took the next two sets to take a 2-1 lead.
Etown evened the field in the fourth set earning a 25-23 win. Baldwin Wallace led 10-4 early in the set. After extending their lead 15-9, the Blue Jays rattled off seven straight to take a 16-15 lead. Several kills from
Arun Gopinath at the end helped the team to win the set, 25-23.
The fifth and final set was tight to start after two Yellow Jacket errors tied up the set at 5-5.
Reid Maas put down two kills to force the eight-point switch. Baldwin Wallace recorded four in a row to take an 11-8 lead. Etown was unable to recover as the Yellow Jackets won, 15-12.
GAME 2: GROVE CITY, ELIZABETHTOWN (19-25, 25-19, 25-15, 26-24)
Arun Gopinath led the match with 16 kills (.344) and six digs.
Braydon Ambruster and
Reid Maas each tallied 8 kills.
Hugh Rogers tallied 37 assists while
Aiden Dietrich totaled 17 digs.
Grove City came out strong to start the first set as they led, 7-1 early. Midway through the set, Etown came back within four of the Wolverines, but they couldn't close the gap as GC took the first set, 25-19. The Blue Jays flipped the script in set two as they started off with a 10-6 lead following four straight points. Two Ambruster kills sandwiched one from Gopinath to put Etown up, 14-9. A Gopinath ace extended the Jays lead by seven before the Wolverines came back within three. Kills from Gopinath, Ambruster, and
Josh McCoy ended the set with a 25-19 Etown win.
The third set saw Etown start off with a 10-6 lead just as they did in set two. Three points in a row from Etown almost doubled their lead bringing the score to, 15-8. Two Maas kills sandwiched a Grove City point which extended the Jays lead to 18-10. Maas and Gopinath finished off the set with five more kills, to down the Wolverines, 25-15. The Blue Jays hit a whopping .682 in the third set while tallying zero attack errors.
Set four was very close to start as Etown led 8-6 before GC took a 9-8 lead after tallying three straight. From there the team's would tie up the set four times before the Blue Jays led 15-13 following Wolverine errors. Grove City grabbed four straight points to take over the lead, 18-16. A kill from Gopinath and an error brought the Blue Jays back within one of GC. In a back-n-forth affair to end the set, Etown rallied to win, 26-24.
Etown returns home this coming Tuesday to host King's (Pa.).
