READING, Pa.—The Elizabethtown women's volleyball team defeated host Alvernia and Brooklyn, 3-1 on Saturday.
GAME 1: ALVERNIA 1, ELIZABETHTOWN 3
Set scores were 19-25, 25-12, 25-21, 25-10. After a slow start and a loss in set one Elizabethtown dominated the next three sets. Alvernia kept things close to start set two, just trailing by one. Two straight kills from
Kate Barbon put the team in a 12-8 lead. The Jays took control through the rest of the set with help from
Bailey McFeaters,
Lucy Stanek,
Marah Glenna, and
Alexa Adamek. Etown jumped to a 23-11 lead before kills from Glenn and
Ida Fisher put the team away, 25-12.
Set three started the same as the second with the Golden Wolves staying close. After four straight from Etown the Jays led, 10-8. Alvernia rattled off five in a row to take a 16-14 lead. The two teams traded points for a few before the Blue Jays pulled away at 22-19 after four in a row. McFeaters smacked one final kill down to give Etown the 25-21 win.
Set four saw the Blue Jays jump out to a 9-2 lead with the help of Golden Wolves errors. Barbon put down two straight kills, extending Etown's lead to 15-5. A 5-1 run from Etown put them within five of match-point. Alvernia errors ended the set 25-10 with Etown coming out on top.
GAME 2: BROOKLYN 1, ELIZABETHTOWN 3
After dropping a close first set a 25-23 Elizabethtown came back to win the next three sets, 25-20, 25-21, 25-17. After Brooklyn took an early lead in set two the Blue Jays moved ahead 7-5 after six in a row. Kills from Barbon and Adamek tied up the set at 12 before the Jays used their momentum through the end of the set to win, 25-20.
Set three was close to start before Etown tied things up at 9-9 after kills from Stanek, Barbon, Adamek and
Sierra Plummer. The Bulldogs put together a five-point run to take a 14-9 lead prior to the Jays responding and coming within one. Two straight kills from Stanek kept Etown trailing by one against the Bulldogs at 20-19. The Blue Jays earned the final five points to win 25-21.
Etown took control early in the fourth set leading 14-6. On a seven point run the Blue Jays pushed ahead 22-12 with help from Barbon and
Leah Gormley. Barbon and
Sam Lautenslager kills ended the match with a 25-17 set win.
Etown returns home Wednesday, September 17 to host Haverford.
