Catholic nabs women's basketball

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team weren't able to climb out of a halftime hole and had their seven-game win streak snapped by Catholic Wednesday night at Thompson Gym. DaniRae Renno had a team-high 16 points and Kamryn Mengel recorded a career-best 10 points off the bench in the 70-63 loss.

Renno had the first eight points of the game for Elizabethtown as they were able to find the 6'2" forward early and often as they led 8-4 through the first couple minutes of the game. The teams traded threes at the end of the first as Lindsay Boyd knocked down a three with 12 seconds left and Keegan Douglas beat the buzzer at the other end to put the Cardinals up three going into the second, 20-17.

The Blue Jays struggled from the field in the second, hitting onlyl one of 14 attempts, but managed to stay close, hitting seven of 10 free throw attempts.

Catholic built up a nine-point lead late after a three from Kerry Flaherty, but Makenna Mummert was able to get inside for a buzzer beater of her own to send the Jays into half down seven, 33-26.

After being outscored 22-10 in the first half in the paint, Elizabethtown's first six makes of the third were all in the painted area as they were able to cut the deficit down to three after Renno's layup with 5:37 remaining in the third.

The Cardinals rebuilt their lead back up to nine over the next two minutes, but a mid-range jumper from Jess King from the left baseline and a big-time three from Mengel made it a four-point game in a one-minute span. Kennedy then hit consecutive shots and Mengel got to the hoop for the layup as the Blue Jays stormed back to get to within two, 52-50, with under a minute left in the third.

Every time Etown got close, Catholic would build back and separate as their advantage was back to three possessions midway through the fourth. Douglas and Alexa Kenah hit important three-point shots to help stave off any sort of Blue Jays' run.

Cyleigh Wilson's three made it a six-point game with 19 seconds left in the game, but it was too late for the Jays as Catholic ran out the clock.

King grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and Renno blocked six shots.

Elizabethtown plays at Moravian on Saturday, February 8, at 4 p.m.
