WASHINGTON, DC.-- The Elizabethtown College men's basketball team led 30-28 going into halftime at Catholic Wednesday evening but the Cardinals managed to pull away towards the end of the second half to win, 68-59.
Rance Russo led all scorer's with 19 points, six rebounds, and three blocks.
Austin Finarelli totaled 17 points.
EJ Finney and
Zuri Harris each totaled eight points while Finney also grabbed eight rebounds and eight assists.
Catholic grabbed an early 11-4 lead following three straight layups. Three straight Etown layups brought the team back within one of the Cardinals. In the next ten minutes the two teams traded baskets with neither leading by more than two. Catholic was able to pull ahead by four after two layups and a jumper with just over a minute remaining in the first half. Two final 3-pointers from Harris and Russo put Elizabethtown up, 30-28 at halftime.
Russo extended the Jays lead to 32-28 to start off the second half. Etown and Catholic kept things close before a three from
MJ Branker and a layup from Finney put Etown up by five points in the 14th minute. Three's from Finarelli and Harris held the Jays lead at 47-43 midway through the half. With four minutes left in the game the Cardinals had extended their lead to seven following a 3-pointer. With help from
Reese Ziegler and Finarelli, Elizabethtown trailed 58-57 with just over two minutes on the clock. Catholic would go on to win by nine points in the final minute and a half.
Men's basketball continues their road stint as they travel to Moravian this Saturday, February 8. Note the game time has been changed to 2 PM.
