Women's lacrosse wins big in season opener

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Sophomore Abby Bach set new career-highs and freshman Ella Scholes made an immediate impact in her debut as the Elizabethtown College women's lacrosse team won big over Gwynedd Mercy in the season opener at Wolf Field, 20-4. Scholes led all players with six goals and seven points.

Lauren Puntanen had the season opening goal just over a minute into the game on a feed from Abby Bach, her first of three assists. Puntanen's goal was scored a player up after an early card on Gwynedd Mercy.

The Blue Jays pumped in seven first-quarter goals as Megan Gress, Bach, Megan Meyer, and Scholes (first career goal) each contributed goals. Gress (up), Scholes, and Kendall Ulmer each scored to make it 10-0. Ulmer then dished to Gress for her fourth of the contest with 3:21 left in the half.

The Griffins broke up the shutout with 1:13 to go in the second, but Bach responded with five seconds before the halftime buzzer to complete her first career hat trick. She finished the game with a career-high six points (3g,3a). Etown led 12-1 at the half.

It was all Elizabethtown after an early Gwynedd Mercy goal in the third quarter as the Jays scored seven unanswered with four in the third that trickled into the fourth with three more for EC. Jordyn Hironimus started off the fourth-quarter scoring. Scholes added her fifth and sixth goals of the game, including a second free position goal with a minute left.

Rachel Murphy made eight saves in goal to get the win. Molly Kleinert played the last 6:14 for Elizabethtown and made her first career save on a free position attempt by the Griffins.

The Blue Jays will play at Albright on Saturday, February 22, at 12 p.m.
