No. 14/22 Elizabethtown holds off No. 18 Messiah in overtime

GRANTHAM, Pa. -- Senior Allyia Kennedy put up a career-high 29 points for the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team Tuesday night at Messiah in the Jays' 80-77 overtime win over the Falcons. Makenna Mummert added 21 points and Kiley Wilhelm had 10 off the bench.

Elizabethtown shot over 50 percent in the first half and carried a nine-point lead into halftime. The Blue Jays had five players with at least six points or more over the first two quarters, led by nine from Kennedy, who was 4-for-5 from the field. The Etown bench provided a distinct advantage as they outscored the Falcons 12-2 in bench points as Cadence Anderson and Wilhelm each had six on a combined 5-for-6 shooting.

Messiah got hot in the second half, hitting at nearly a 60 percent clip (16-for-28) as they would outscore Elizabethtown by nine. Kennedy had a layup that gave the Jays a two-point lead with just under a minute and a half to go. The Falcons tied it with less than a minute remaining, but neither side could get the game-winning basket as overtime was needed.

Kennedy had 20 of EC's 30 second-half points heading into the OT period, tied at 68 apiece.

There were four lead changes in overtime, which started off with a three from Messiah to take a 71-68 lead on the first possession. The teams went back and forth until a three pointer and then a steal by Kennedy and a layup by Mummert put Elizabethtown up for good. The senior had 10 of the Jays' 12 points in overtime.

The Falcons were within one, but Mummert closed out the game with two makes at the foul line and Wilhelm recorded a late steal with three seconds to go to prevent Messiah from any chance at a game-tying attempt.

The win moves Elizabethtown to 5-0 on the season. The Jays will host Drew on Wednesday, December 3, at 7 p.m.
