ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- In a game that easily could have gone to Susquehanna, the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team showed its resiliency Saturday afternoon as they outscored the River Hawks in the fourth quarter to earn a 59-56 win to move to 4-0 and 2-0 in the conference.
Makenna Mummert led the Jays with 17 points.
The shots weren't falling early for Elizabethtown, who hit just four of 15 in the first quarter. A 4-for-4 effort at the foul line helped keep the Blue Jays close as they only trailed Susquehanna by one, 14-13, after one.
On the other hand, the River Hawks were hitting from the floor, especially inside where they racked up 22 points in the paint in the first half. Carly George hit a late shot from just inside the arc as Susquehanna led by eight at the break, 31-23.
Ellie Fasick kicked off an 8-2 run for the Jays to start the third quarter. Fasick and Mummert each accounted for four points in that run as Fasick's foul shots made it a 33-31 game. Susquehanna was able to keep Etown at arms' length, even getting their lead back up to eight with 56 seconds left in the third.
Cadence Anderson hit a floater on Etown's second-to-last possession of the quarter and they went into the fourth trailing by six.
Elizabethtown, needing to win the fourth quarter by at least seven points, put the pressure on the River Hawks. EC was extremely efficient from the floor, knocking down seven of 10 shots while Susquehanna went cold, hitting only four of 17 attempts, none of which were threes.
Susquehanna led by four with 4:25 remaining when
Ella Gordon hit a big trey, her second of the game, to cut the deficit to just one. The Blue Jays held the River Hawks scoreless for over two minutes while they climbed back on top thanks to Kennedy's basket inside with 2:40 left.
Zoie Maffei, who had a game-high 20 points, 15 in the first half, tied it back up at 53-53, but
Kamryn Mengel got inside for another Jays' layup to return the lead back at Etown.
Kennedy broke a 55-55 tie with under a minute to go, dropping in a three, the team's fifth of the game, to push EC back ahead by three.
Elizabethtown was unable to put the River Hawks away, missing on key late free throws that provided Susquehanna a chance. Multiple misses from the River Hawks while the clock wound down and Mummert secured a final rebound with two seconds as time expired.
Kennedy and Mengel both added 11 points for the Blue Jays.
Peyton Houlihan had a team-high seven boards.
Elizabethtown plays at Messiah on Tuesday, November 25, at 7 p.m.
