No. 14 Elizabethtown stays unbeaten, wins Landmark opener at Moravian

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Five players recorded double figures for the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team Wednesday night at Moravian. Kamryn Mengel led the Blue Jays with 17 points as Etown beat the Greyhounds to stay unbeaten while winning their conference opener, 70-67.

The Blue Jays shot well from the floor in the first half, nearly 60 percent to be exact, but only led by two as Moravian capitalized on 11 Etown turnovers and turned them into 17 points. Mengel had nine of her 17 in the first two quarters.

Kiley Wilhelm's free throws in the third quarter gave the Jays a seven-point lead, their largest of the game, at 48-41. The Greyhounds quickly responded with a 6-0 run to make it a one-point game and then tied it and took the lead moments later. Mengel returned the lead to Elizabethtown with 33 seconds left in the third on her driving layup. That came after the junior grabbed her own miss and got the put back to go.

It was a one possession game through the first six minutes of the fourth. Mengel's and-one pushed it to four, then foul shots from Allyia Kennedy made it six, 67-61, with 3:02 remaining in the game.

Lizzie Lustig, who led Moravian with a game-high 24 points, drilled a three with 11 seconds to go to get it back to a three-point deficit, 70-67. Some late missed freebies allowed the Greyhounds a chance to tie the game, but a turnover after a timeout gave the ball back to the Jays and they were able to run out the final seconds to hold on for the victory.

Joining Mengel in double digits were Peyton Houlihan with a career-high 12, while Kennedy, Ella Gordon, and Wilhelm each added 10. Wilhelm and Kennedy both grabbed eight boards apiece to lead the Blue Jays in rebounding.

Elizabethtown hosts Susquehanna on Saturday, November 22, at 4 p.m.
