Third quarter surge pushes #22/25 women's basketball past Moravian

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team celebrated their graduate students and seniors in a pregame ceremony before going on to beat Moravian on Saturday at Thompson Gymnasium, 73-45. DaniRae Renno led all scorers with 18 points, Jess King notched a double-double of 11 points and 15 rebounds in the win. Allyia Kennedy (13) and Makenna Mummert (10) were also in double figures for the Jays.

The Greyhounds were able to keep it close throughout the first half, only trailing 29-26 at the break.

It was the third quarter that separated the teams. Juliana Vassallo knocked down a three to cut the deficit to three for Moravian with 7:10 to go in the third. Elizabethtown would wind up going on an 18-5 run to close out the third quarter and take a 16-point lead into the fourth.

Renno, King, and Summer McNulty each hit baskets for the Blue Jays before a jumper by Jayda Cartagena ended a quick 6-0 spurt. Mummert, Renno, Ella Gordon, Lindsay Boyd, and Kennedy all contributed to that surge that pushed Etown well in front.

Moravian was limited to seven fourth quarter points as the Jays' defense held the Hounds to 3-for-14 shooting in the quarter.

Grace O'Connor grabbed seven boards as Etown doubled up Moravian in team rebounding, 50-25. O'Connor also added five assists while Gordon provided a game-high six dimes.

Elizabethtown plays at Drew on Wednesday, January 22, at 7 p.m.
