Blue Jays go the Distance to Take Down DeSales & York (Pa.) in Five Sets

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa.—It was a long day for the Elizabethtown women's volleyball team as both their matches against DeSales and York (Pa.) went to five sets with the Blue Jays coming out on top.

GAME 1: ELIZABETHTOWN 3, DESALES 2 (17-25, 25-15, 19-25, 25-18, 15-10)
Lucy Stanek picked up her third double-double of the season as she tallied 17 kills (.250) and 13 digs. Emma Bitner also tallied a double-double for a season-high of 27 assists and 12 digs. Savannah Lesley added 11 kills while Gracie Britten and Sierra Plummer pitched in eight kills.

Set one began with DeSales coming out hot as they went on a 9-1 run. Elizabethtown was able to come within two before the Bulldogs again pulled away. DeSales would go up 21-13 during a 6-1. Two DeSales errors kept Etown in the set before a DeSales block would end the set, 25-17.

Elizabethtown came out on top early as they doubled their lead, 12-6 after Stanek kills sandwiched a DeSales error. Kills from Stanek and Plummer brought Etown within five of set-point. Two Lesley aces, a Britten kill and DeSales errors gave Etown the 25-15 win.

Early set three was tight as the two teams traded points. DeSales then jumped to an 11-4 lead before DeSales errors would bring Etown within three of the Bulldogs. Lesley smacked down two straight kills to bring the score to 17-14; DeSales. The Blue Jays would filter in a point here and there but it wasn't enough as DeSales won, 25-19.

Set four between the Bulldogs and Blue Jays again started tight before Elizabethtown rattled off six straight to lead, 16-12. Britten and Lesley kept DeSales trailing by four. Britten and Plummer then helped Etown go five in a row to come within two of set-point. Stanek and Plummer put down the final kills to win, 25-18.

Elizabethtown made it to the mid-set switch with the score at 8-5. Four straight points from Etown extended their lead to 13-9. Kate Barbon and a Bulldog error ended the match, 15-10.

GAME 2: ELIZABETHTOWN 3; YORK (PA.) 2 (25-8, 18-25, 25-20, 24-26, 15-11)
Stanek grabbed her third straight double-double tallying 12 kills and 16 digs. Bitner also earned another double-double with 24 assists and 10 digs. Britten and Barbon each contributed nine kills. Lucy Stern totaled 16 digs and two aces.

Elizabethtown came out swinging on set one vs. York (Pa.) as they pulled ahead 9-3 early. Plummer and Stanek sandwiched a Spartan error which extended their lead to 14-6. The Blue Jays would go on to win 25-8 in a dominating set and they finished with an 11-1 run.

Set two was tight as the two teams traded points. Two York errors tied up the set at 12-12. After a slow start York was able to rattle off five in a row, taking a 21-15 lead. A service error followed up by a service ace ended the set in York's favor, 25-18.

Etown fought back starting set three, jumping to a 10-4 lead after kills from Ida Fisher and Plummer. Barbon and Bitner helped the Blue Jays double their lead to 16-8. Through the end of the set the team's went back-n-forth before a kill from Bitner ended the set 25-20; Etown.

The Blue Jays started with an early lead in set four but York would tie it up 9-9 before gaining momentum. The set stayed tight as Elizabethtown lead by just one at 16-15. After lots of back and forth, the Spartans won 26-24.

To start the final set, Etown jumped to an 8-1 lead with the help from Barbon, Britten, and Bitner. Three straight points then put Etown up 11-2. Barbon would smack down a kill extending the lead to 12-5. The Spartans gained momentum and came close but it wasn't enough as the final Etown points were courtesy of Spartan errors.

Elizabethtown ends their home stint against Messiah this Tuesday, September 10 at 7PM.
